Common Questions About Pool Chemicals

How do I know which pool chemicals I need?

If you are a seasoned pool owner, always start with a water test. Once you have your results, you can add the necessary chemicals to properly treat your swimming pool. If you are a new pool owner, it’s recommended to consult with a pool professional for guidance.

Can I mix different brands of pool chemicals?

Most chlorine-based pool chemicals from different brands are generally compatible when used according to label directions. The main exception is biguanide, which is a non-chlorine system and cannot be mixed with chlorine products, and vice versa. If you use biguanide, only use biguanide-compatible chemicals. Always follow product directions and consult with a pool professional if you are unsure about compatibility.

How often should I shock my pool?

Once a week during swim season is a good baseline. Also shock your swimming pool after heavy rain, pool parties, or if the water starts to look cloudy. A general guideline is about 1 pound of shock per 10,000 gallons of water. For biguanide pools, you add 1 quart of oxidizer per 10,000 gallons of water.

What are the ideal levels for pH and total alkalinity?

pH: 7.4 - 7.6
Total Alkalinity: 80 - 120 ppm

How often should I test my water?

You should test your water at least 2-3 times per week during the swim season.

For best results:

  • Test daily or every other day if the pool is heavily used or after rain, heat waves, or parties
  • Test weekly during low-use periods
  • Test after adding chemicals to confirm levels are balanced once sufficient time has passed for them to circulate and fully take effect

What chemicals do I need to keep on hand?

For routine swimming pool care:

  • Sanitizer
  • Pool shock/oxidizer
  • Algaecide
  • pH increaser and pH decreaser
  • Total alkalinity increaser
  • Calcium hardness increaser
  • Test strips or test kit

Pool Chemicals for Every Pool Type and Problem

Keeping your pool water clean and safe comes down to a handful of chemicals used the right way. Whether you're maintaining an in-ground pool, an above-ground setup, or biguanide, the fundamentals are the same: sanitize, shock, test, and balance.

Sanitizers are the foundation. Sanitizers are what keeps your swimming pool water safe to swim in by controlling harmful contaminants. Chlorine is the most popular choice. And for pool owners who prefer chlorine-free maintenance, Baquacil offers a biguanide-based system that works differently from traditional sanitizers. Salt is another option, not a sanitizer by itself, but it generates chlorine through a salt chlorine generator.

Shock (also called oxidizers) gives a swimming pool a high dose of oxidizer that quickly breaks down contaminants. Calcium Hypochlorite (cal-hypo) shock and Sodium Dichloro-s-Triazinetrione (dichlor) are the most common type. It's fast-acting and effective against algae and organic waste. Non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate) is a gentler option that lets you swim sooner after treatment. In simple terms: shocking "resets" the pool water.

Algaecides are designed to prevent algae from growing or help eliminate existing algae in the pool water. Algaecides control and weaken algae, while chlorine sanitizes and destroys it completely.

Balancers are chemicals used to stabilize and fine-tune your swimming pool water chemistry so everything stays in the proper range for comfort, clarity, and sanitizer effectiveness.

  • pH increaser and pH decreaser: adjust how acidic or basic the water is
  • Total alkalinity increaser: stabilizes the pH and prevents fluctuation
  • Calcium hardness increaser: protects surfaces and equipment from corrosion or scaling
  • Cyanuric acid: also known as stabilizer, helps protect chlorine form sunlight breakdown

Clarifiers and enzymes handle the problems your filter can't. Clarifiers clump tiny particles together so your filter can trap them. Enzyme products break down oils, lotions, and organic material that cause surface scum and waterline buildup.

Stain and scale removers are used to treat metal stains and calcium buildup on swimming pool surfaces. The first step is to identify the issue, often with an identification kit, to determine the most effective treatment. Once the problem is identified, you can choose the correct product and dosage based on your swimming pool size.
